About Northwinds ESU
We are a new Explorer unit which started in Brunel District in September 2006.

At the end of 2005 and the start of 2006 there were some district boundary changes in Bristol. The old Bristol North-West and Bristol North-East districts were relaunched as Cabot (formerly North-West) and Brunel (formerly North-East). The boundaries also changed.

The leaders now running the unit were (and still are) involved in running one of the groups which changed from one district to the other.

This left several groups with no explorer unit near them in their district. As a result three of us decided to start a new unit for all of those who could not get to one of the existing units.

The Unit was originally based at the 209th Bristol in Lockleaze. We spent the first 15 months there and received a great deal of support from the Group. We then managed to recruit enough members that we have had to find a slightly bigger headquarters and met at the 1st Bristol Scout Group. This is also the headquarters that used to belong to the 234th Bristol Northwinds Scout Group until it closed (see Why Northwinds? below). We were based there for 20 months.

As we have managed to grow a bit more we have now moved to Horfield United Reform Church a bit further up Muller Road and where 96th Bristol Sea Scouts used to meet.

Why Northwinds?
The original 234th Bristol Northwinds Scout Group opened in 1934 and closed in April 2005.

All of the leaders currently involved in the unit had connections to the 234th and decided to use the name and scarf from the old group.

The unit is a district unit and is not linked to one individual group.
